Third European Summer School on Neurogastroenterology 2006
The third European Summerschool on Neurogastroenterology almost turned into a Winterschool, with heavy snow on the first day and an unusually cold week at Schloss Haigerloch (Haigerloch Castle) (www.schloss-haigerloch.de) near Tübingen, Germany for this time of the year (April 9 to 14, 2006). Twenty-two students (5 from drug companies) from around the world (from Australia to Poland) were taught by 7 distinguished faculty members ("Group of Seven") who gave an update on the latest developments in neurogastroenterology, from basic science to clinical applications.
Faculty and Topics: David Grundy, Sheffield, U.K.: Afferent and efferent intestinal signalling (extrinsic gut innervation); Michael Schemann, Munich, Germany: Enteric innervation - basic and clinical; Thilo Wedel, Kiel, Germany: Enteric neuro-muscular pathologies; Hans Gregersen, Aalborg, Denmark: Biomechanics of the gut wall; David Thompson, Manchester, U.K.: Central signal processing of gastrointestinal information; Guy Boeckxstaens, Amsterdam, The Netherlands: Neuroimmune interactions in the GI tract; and Jan Tack, Leuven, Belgium: Symptomatology of visceral information.
The Summerschool format -- oral presentations by experts mixed with discussions and group work devoted to specific "hot" neurogastro topics -- is by now a fixed and approved format, the venue seems perfect for a small group, the social program included a welcome reception, a visit at "the" German castle (Burg Hohenzollern), a guided tour through Tübingen, and a visit of the Atomic Museum Haigerloch. The course was organized under the auspices of the European Society of Neurogastroenterology (www.neurogastro.org).
It was discussed and is not yet decided whether the next summerschool will be in 2007 (April 1 to 6, 2007) or in 2008, and some reasons argue in favor of a biannual event. Please check this website in due course for further information, and express you interest by writing a letter to:
